Installing Plutonium for MW3

Getting Modern Warfare 3 running online in 2026 — and, more usefully, what to do when it doesn't.

Plutonium is a community client that lets you play Modern Warfare 3 online after the official services stopped being worth using. It needs a legitimate copy of the game — it does not include one, and it is not a way to get one. Their own documentation is the authoritative install reference and is kept current; this page covers the same ground plus the failures that actually cost people an evening.

Setup

From download to in-game

01

Check you have what you need

  1. A legitimate installation of Modern Warfare 3. Plutonium does not distribute game files and neither do we — this is a client for a game you own, not a way around owning it.
  2. Windows, and roughly 16 GB free. Disc read errors on first launch are very often just a nearly-full drive.
  3. A Plutonium account, created on their site. The launcher signs in with it.
02

Install the launcher

  1. Download the launcher from plutonium.pw and run it. Their documentation is the authoritative source for this part and is kept current — follow it rather than a third-party copy of it, this page included.
  2. Point the launcher at your MW3 folder when it asks. This is the folder containing the game executable.
  3. Let it finish updating before you launch anything. The first run pulls a lot of files and takes a while.
03

Launch IW5 multiplayer

  1. Pick IW5, then Multiplayer. Survival also runs on multiplayer servers here, so this is the right mode either way.
  2. Set your in-game name before you join anything. Stats are tracked against that name, so changing it later splits your record.
  3. The console opens with the ~ key. You will need it to connect by address.
04

Join a server

  1. The in-game browser lists public servers, but it is not always complete. Connecting by address is more reliable.
  2. Open the GRN server list, press Copy connect on any server, paste into the console and hit enter.
  3. It looks like: connect 167.114.157.225:30000 — no password, no queue.

When it breaks

Errors, and what they actually mean

Search the exact text of your error — it is almost certainly one of these.

Error while downloading file … context deadline exceeded

The launcher gave up on a slow download. Open a command prompt in the Plutonium launcher folder and run plutonium.exe -timeout 600, which raises the per-file timeout to ten minutes. Large zone files on a slow connection routinely exceed the default.

steam_api.dll is missing

Plutonium removes that file deliberately, and Steam notices it is gone. In Steam, right-click Modern Warfare 3 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, and it will be restored.

Unable to load import '_AiL_set_redist_directory@4' from mss32.dll

Almost always a game-directory problem rather than a missing audio library: the launcher is pointed at a folder that is not a complete MW3 install. Re-run setup and select the folder containing the game executable, then verify the game files.

Disc read error

Two usual causes. Either the drive is full or close to it, or the base game files are damaged — verify integrity through Steam. It is rarely anything to do with Plutonium itself.

It crashed the first time I launched it

Known and harmless. The client needs to remove a file on first run and crashes doing it. Launch again and it will not happen a second time.

My antivirus flagged the Plutonium update as a virus

A false positive. Plutonium patches a running game process, which is behaviourally similar to things antivirus software is built to stop. Add the Plutonium folder to your exclusions. As always, only download the launcher from their official site.

Stuck on 'Awaiting connection'

Usually a firewall blocking UDP. Allow both the Plutonium launcher and IW5 through Windows Firewall on private and public networks. If you are on a corporate or campus network, outbound UDP may be blocked entirely and there is nothing to fix client-side.

The server list is empty

The in-game browser sometimes fails to populate. Connect by address instead — that path does not depend on the master list at all. Every server on our list has a copy-paste connect command for this reason.

The game crashes when a specific map loads

Usually missing DLC or custom map files. Re-run the launcher and let it verify. Servers running heavy custom rotations will pull extra files on join, so give the first connect to one a moment before assuming it has frozen.

Still broken?

For client and launcher problems, the Plutonium forums are the right place — they wrote it and they will know. For anything about connecting to our servers specifically, ask in Discord with your in-game name and what you have already tried.
